Tattva
An ambient synth for the Teenage Engineering OP–XY, built with the unofficial Open-XY SDK. Four elements (gust, rain, surf and fire) play around the notes you hold and set off chimes, bells or glass tuned to those notes. Everything is synthesised in code: no samples.
Tattva is Sanskrit for "element".
How it plays
- Press a key: a chime rings at once and the elements swell in.
- Hold: gusts swing the clapper into short runs of hits on neighbouring tubes, raindrops tap, waves swell, fire pops clink. The chimes ring the notes you hold, sometimes an octave up, and a tube struck again keeps ringing.
- Release: everything rings out. Set a long amp release on the OP–XY for natural tails.
- Chords and fast playing: one continuous weather plays for the whole track. New notes carry it on instead of restarting it; it fades out only after you stop playing.
Controls

| Page 1: elements | Page 2: chimes |
|---|---|
| Gust: wind strength; how hard the chimes swing and are struck | Type: chime / bell / glass |
| Rain: drizzle to downpour; drops tap the chimes | Catch: how readily the elements set off the chimes |
| Surf: distant waves to close crashes | Ring: short ping to long natural decay |
| Fire: a campfire's crackles and pops; pops clink the chimes | Chimes: chime volume |
All eight can be LFO destinations. The builder's preview has five sounds to audition: Rain Chimes, Gale, Shore Bells, Hearth Glass, Monsoon.
The screen is a night shore drawn in hairlines: wind chimes hang from a branch and swing with the wind, lighting up when struck and fading as they ring. Rain falls past a crescent moon, the sea is nearly still until Surf brings in swells and breaking crests, and a small campfire burns under the moon with smoke curling up.
Build
With the Open-XY SDK (tested with 0.0.2 on OP–XY OS 1.2.1):
python sdk.py test --machine path/to/tattva
python sdk.py kit --personal --stock-os <your stock os.ldr> --machine path/to/tattva --out <folder>
See the SDK's documentation for the toolchain, the builder and installation. Firmware is always built from your own OP–XY's OS; no OS is distributed here.
Notes
- Output is mono, as for every Open-XY synth: use the OP–XY's effects for space.
- If you hear dropouts with many voices at busy settings, lower Ring or Catch.
- Unofficial and experimental, like all Open-XY machines. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Teenage Engineering.
Changes
- v1.0.2: lighter on the CPU for the same sound: the elements use the one-instruction multiply, the darker layers run at half rate, and quiet chime partials stop sooner.
- v1.0.1: new screen; weather no longer cuts out when playing fast; new gust (pitch follows the gust, faint whistle) and fire (crackles and pops, no hiss); a gentle high-pass takes the boom out of the elements.
- v1.0.0: first release.
